Bridgewater State College, or BSU for short, is a public liberal arts college located in Bridgewater, which is a town in Plymouth County, in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population of more than 25 000 inhabitants, according to the 2000 census.
Bridgewater State was established in 1840 by Horace Mann, as a normal school. Its current name was adopted in July, 2010, when the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate have voted to change BSC to University status. Throughout its history, the university has also been known as Bridgewater State College, Bridgewater Teachers College, Bridgewater State Teachers College, and State Teachers College at Bridgewater.
At the graduate level, BSU offers its students master's degree programs and certificates of advanced graduate study, providing `a diverse array of academic programs, close association with a superb faculty, extensive online and technological resources, opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom, and a supportive network of advisers and counselors`.
BSU's athletic teams are known as the Bears and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the ECAC, MASCAC, Little East, and the NEFC, in 21 intercollegiate sports. Their distinctive colors are crimson and white.
Among Bridgewater State's noteworthy alumni, there are also: Jeff Corwin - actor, conservationist, producer, popular TV host, Mark Goddard - actor, film writer, Jeffrey Donovan - actor, Robert Stack - actor and former host of Unsolved Mysteries, Ruth Turner - pioneering marine biologist, and Ann Hobson Pilot - principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.
